Garland Independent School District Information

General Information

Garland ISD serves over 55,000 students in Garland, Sachse and Rowlett. In addition to standard K-12, GISD offers Pre-K programs for children with limited English language proficiency or who qualify under federal income eligibility guidelines.

GISD has a night school program at Garland HS for older and work-study students. The night school includes core subjects, GED and community education programs.

Starting in the 2006-2007 school year, all GISD elementary schools will offer only full-day kindergarten.

Choice of School

GISD allows students to attend any school in the district, rather than using strict attendance zones based on your home’s address. There are limits to this choice, however. “Choice of School” forms must be turned in by the announced deadline EVERY year. Also, if the number of students choosing a particular school exceeds that school’s capacity, the students living the farthest away will be denied enrollment at that school and will have to make another choice.

GISD has several magnet programs available. Participation in these programs is by invitation only based on academic performance or a “try-out” process for various performing arts. Enrollment at these schools is limited to students who live in the immediate neighborhood surrounding the school and those who qualify for the magnet program.

Each high school has unique Career & Technology programs or College and Career programs for interested students. These programs may include vocational training or dual enrollment through the Dallas County Community Colleges.

Bus transportation in GISD is very limited. Usually, only students who live more than 2 miles form the closest school or participants in special educational programs, including the magnet schools are provided with transportation.

Please use the official GISD link below for more details about each school, the choice of school process, deadlines and transportation. Also, the principal at any school in GISD can help explain the process and answer any questions you may have.

Enrollment Information

Enrollment is usually done at the school where the student will attend. You will need several things to enroll:
Proof of Residency in the GISD (Example: lease agreement/utility bill);
Birth Certificate;
Immunization Records;
Social Security Card (if applicable);
Recent Report Cards if transferring in from another school district.

All students who have a home language other than English MUST enroll at the Garland ISD Student Services Center located at 720 Stadium Drive. All regular education program students may be enrolled at the Student Services Center during normal working hours while schools are on summer break.

Please use the official GISD link below for more details about enrollment or call the Office of Student Services at 972-494-8255.
